The first national conference on telemedicine was organized at Sanjay Gandhi postgraduate Institute of Medical sciences, Lucknow, from April 23 – 27, 2001 to create awareness and to provide exposure to the state- of- art technology in the field of telemedicine to our medical and technical community. This conference was organized in collaboration with European Institute of Telesurgery, Strasbourg, France and Online telemedicine Research Institute, Ahmedabad, India. This was an event that was first kind in the country. The conference included several presentations by eminent international experts and an exhibition of available products in the field. There were several workshops on various disciplines including teleconsultation, telesurgery, telecardiology, teleradiology and telepathology. The conference proved useful to those interested in health delivery system, health planning, medical education, information technology, and telecommunication technologies and provided an opportunity to interact with the specialists in the field.
